‘United better prepared for league title charge’

Manchester United are better equipped to fight for the Premier League title in the upcoming season but need to improve further to be a contender for the Champions League, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

In Mourinho's first season at Old Trafford, United won the League Cup and the Europa League but finished sixth in the English top flight, 24 points behind champions Chelsea.

"This season is going to be more difficult but I think we have better conditions to fight for the Premier League," Mourinho told the BBC.

"I think this season we are a little bit better equipped. We are against fantastic teams, against amazing investments.

"But I believe in our group, in our spirit, in our empathy, in our togetherness. I trust my boys and we are going to try."

Having lifted the Europa League in May, United secured direct entry to the Champions League group stage but the Portuguese manager believes they are still behind the continent's top clubs.

"We went to the Europa League as one of the top teams, we go to the Champions League and we are not one of the top teams," Mourinho added.

"We have to be better, much better, for that objective. The base of everything is to find what I call a happy dressing room."

Mourinho has added striker Romelu Lukaku and centre back Victor Lindelof in the current transfer window but is still hoping to sign two more players ahead of the new season.

"One midfield player would give me more options. The other is an attacking player through the wings to give me more attacking options," he said.

The British media have linked United with Chelsea's Nemanja Matic and Tottenham Hotspur's Eric Dier as midfield options. Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic is Mourinho's preferred choice to improve the attacking line, the reports have said.

United kick off their league campaign at home against West Ham United on August 13.

Lloris frustrated by Spurs' lack of progress

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has conceded he is frustrated by their lack of progress in Europe but says the club will be better prepared for the Champions League this year after going out in the group stage last season.

Lloris made it to the semis of Europe's top club competition with Olympique Lyonnais in 2010 but his best European run with Spurs has been to the quarters of the Europa League in 2013.

The 30-year-old France international, who joined Spurs in 2012, said the squad under manager Mauricio Pochettino should be doing much better in Europe.

"It's been five seasons now that I've been with Spurs and I've got a little bit frustrated about European competition, because I think we've got the talent to go further than we've done," Lloris told reporters.

"Even in the Champions League, we have the potential to reach another level.

"Hopefully this season we can prove our real value, compete against the best teams in Europe and go as far as possible, even if the first target will be to get out of the group stage.”

Lloris said Spurs lacked experience when they were knocked out in the group stage of the Champions League last season.

"For many of the players last season, it was their first experience of the Champions League," he added.

"Every season the level has to be a step up – individually and collectively. We have a lot of ambition in our squad even if it's still a young team."

Spurs won two of their six games in Europe's top tier tournament last season, losing twice at Wembley, where they will play all their home games next season.

Heart checks needed - Goldson

Brighton defender Connor Goldson says clubs should carry out more checks on players in a bid to detect potential heart problems.

Goldson, 24, has not played competitively since January after the discovery of a swollen aorta.

Former Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote died in June after collapsing while training in China, and his fellow Ivorian Eugene Kouame died earlier this month after suffering a heart attack.

"You look at Tiote. You never know what can happen. Two players in the last few months is way too many," Goldson told The Times on Wednesday.

"Football needs to do something. Every club needs to check at least once a year. Unfortunately players don't get the scans.

"I never felt a thing. If my little story can make other clubs think they need to do a test, hopefully it can save other players."

Goldson's problem, which was discovered during routine screening by the club, meant he missed the closing stages of the Championship campaign as Chris Hughton's side returned to the top-flight for the first time since 1983.

He could return to league action when Brighton begin the new season at home to Manchester City on August 12, and he would do so feeling fortunate to be alive.

"The surgeon explained it's like a balloon and it gets bigger and bigger and it can just pop - or you can be fortunate and it never goes," he said.

"The average person has (an aorta of) 4cm and you're at risk at 5cm. My last scan was 4.9cm. So I was very close."

Koeman sure Barkley will leave Everton

Everton manager Ronald Koeman sparked a transfer chase for Ross Barkley on Wednesday by revealing he is "100 percent" certain the England midfielder will leave Goodison Park.

Barkley is in the final year of his Everton contract and last season he was told by Koeman he would be sold if he didn't sign the Premier League club's offer of a lucrative new deal.

Koeman claims Barkley has made it clear he wants to leave and the Dutch coach expects the 23-year-old to eventually get his wish, with Arsenal and Tottenham both keen on signing the Everton youth team product.

Asked if he was 100 percent sure, Barkley would go, Koeman told reporters: "Yeah. Ross told me at the end of the season he wanted another challenge.

"His personal situation is really not so difficult: we made a good offer to him to sign a new contract, he declined that contract and told me that he is looking for a new challenge.

"It is his decision, I need to respect that and then we will see what happens but what I heard from the board is there is not really an offer on the table for Ross.

"My priority is not Ross, with respect, it is his decision. I look more to other players. I knew this at the end of the season.

"Everyone knows what the situation is and that's enough, I don't talk any more about this."

Barkley is currently injured, having had surgery on a minor groin problem, and will be out for up to four weeks.

Koeman has already brought in Ronald Koeman from Ajax to replace Barkley and is eyeing a move for Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson.

But when Barkley returns to fitness, Koeman has no plans to remove him from the squad until a transfer is sealed.

"He had his groin surgery last week and normally it takes three to four weeks before he is back," Koeman said.

"He has one more year of contract and we work with respect for people and if he is back after his surgery, after the injury, and back for training he will be part of first team sessions."

Hart keen to retain England gloves

Goalkeeper Joe Hart says his loan move to West Ham United from Manchester City was aimed at getting regular playing time at club level to ensure he continues to be first choice for England.

The 30-year-old, who has 71 caps and made 348 appearances for City, appears to have been deemed surplus to requirements by manager Pep Guardiola and spent last season on loan at Torino.

"I've said before, there's absolutely no chance I'd play for England without playing for a team," Hart told Sky Sports. "To be playing for the national team you have to be playing, especially for a team as high quality as England.

"That was part of the thought process, but it's a short career and I love football. I didn't really stand a chance of playing at my previous club, so there was no point hanging around.

"I want to play for a team that wants me, wants me to play and I want to give that back to them."

Hart said he would have preferred a permanent deal but maintains he is fully committed to every team he plays for, no matter the contract situation.

"It's a hard one to work out for me. I'd love to be permanent at a club, but that's not the case, I'll have to go out on loan again which isn't difficult for me because I give 100 percent wherever I am," Hart said.

"I'm 150 percent committed to West Ham - they're the only team for me. West Ham and the national team are the only teams I care about this season."

Hart has yet to make his debut for West Ham but could feature in their upcoming pre-season match against Germany's Werder Bremen on Friday.

Lloris urges Sissoko to seek clarity on future

Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko must seek clarity on his future at the club or risk losing his place in the French squad ahead of next year's World Cup, club and country captain Hugo Lloris has said.

Sissoko, who became Tottenham's record-signing when he moved from Newcastle United last August, struggled to make an impact under manager Mauricio Pochettino in his debut season.

The 27-year-old France international made only eight Premier League starts last campaign and was left out of Spurs' pre-season tour of the United States with a virus.

"Moussa is important for the French national team," France and Spurs captain Lloris told reporters.

"He needs to play, obviously, more than last season. But then it's a question of choices.

"It doesn't belong to me, it belongs to him and we will see what will happen. It's not an easy situation for him, for the team and for the manager."

Lloris said Sissoko, a powerful midfield presence for France at Euro 2016, could still turn things around at the club on the back of his strong mentality.

"He's preparing himself to be ready for the next weeks," Lloris added. "But you know, Moussa is strong in his mind.

"I've played with him for a while and I'm not really worried. It's true that last season was a bit frustrating for him and he's got a lot to prove, and then we'll see what will happen in this period."

Spurs, who finished second in the Premier league last season, kick off their campaign at Newcastle United on 13 August.

Otamendi welcomes competition

Manchester City's new signings will increase competition for first-team places and motivate every player to give their 100 percent, defender Nicolas Otamendi has said.

After a trophyless campaign, City have splurged in the transfer window, signing six players including defenders Kyle Walker, Danilo and Benjamin Mendy.

"It's always positive when there's this much competition," Otamendi told reporters. "It doesn't allow for any of the players to relax, you always have to give 100 percent.

"It makes it complicated to choose the starting XI but that's why we need to have a strong pre-season.

"This season, obviously we've got good quality players and that's always a great thing to have. The ultimate goal is to get titles. Unfortunately we weren't able to do that last season so that's a big goal for us."

Argentina defender Otamendi said there was no bad blood between him and City teammate Gabriel Jesus after the Brazilian suffered a broken eye socket when the duo collided during an international friendly in June.

"It's all good with Gabriel. We had a great game and I actually spoke to him in the locker room after the game," Otamendi added.

"We're all good as teammates – we're used to being able to compete tough on the field and obviously it didn't work out for him. But it's good."
